Pesach Preparation

Hello Grade Four!

These past few weeks at Hebrew school we have been hard at work preparing for Pesach. We have been doing so much work that the kids have decided to send me 10 Plagues to let the go from the hard labour, but I just keep saying No, I will not let them go. We have reviewed the laws of Pesach, as much as was necessary, which basically is the prohibition of eating Chametz (anything leavened). I suggested that this year they take upon themselves a new level of carefulness which it comes to what they eat on Pesach, which takes place Friday, April 22- Saturday, April 30. Please encourage and assist them in having a meaningful and Kosher Passover.

For Pesach, we have reviewed the story of our Exodus from Egypt. As well, to prepare for the Seder, we have been practicing our Mah Nishtana, of course with the accompaniment of my Guitar. We have also been preparing our Haggadah companion cards which will list out the order to the seder, along with what to do at each step and a short question, joke or comment to share at the Pesach table. Please have your child use these papers at your family's seder this year. It will not only make you proud but will install in them a feeling of importance, about their own learning and of Judaism in general.

This week, April 11, at Hebrew school will be our annual School-Wide Model Seder! This year we are featuring oversized items to help illustrate and act out an actual seder. Our duty for the seder was to create an oversized Cup of Eliyahu. It was so much fun to create and the kids really did a great job!

Purim Prep

Well, I hope everyone had a wonderful Purim! Here are some pics of the beautiful SHalach Manot (Purim Baskets) we made in Hebrew school.

They contained everything one needs for the four mitzvahs of Purim:
1) Tzedaka Box for Matanot LaEvyonim (Gifts to the poor)
2) You can use the Tzedakah Box as a gragger when you listen to the Megillah
3) Two food items (a homemade Hamentash we made in class) and a candy for Mishloach Manot
4) The food can tzedakah can be used during your Purim Meal

Those are the four M's of Purim: Matanot LaEvyonim, Megillah, Mishloach Manot and Mishteh (feast)

I am proud of the Grade 4 kids that showed up to the MEGA CHILDREN'S CHALLAH BAKE on March 6, 2016. What a crazy good event!!

Hello Grade 4, This week we learned all about our Hebrew colours. We will be using them each week as adjectives for other hebrew vocabulary words we already know. I am very proud of how much attention you guys gave to this activity.

As well, in Aleph Champ, let us wish a huge Mazal Tov to Zoe (Leah) on her graduation from level purple to brown!! Just one more workbook away from Grey/Black! Keep up the incredible work!!

In the Grey/Black language level we have already learned and memorized over 40 hebrew words, prefixes and suffixes. Keep it up guys!

We will begin learning all about Purim in the coming weeks!!

Chanukah

Hello Parents,

The past two weeks in Hebrew School we have been getting ourselves ready for Chanukah!

We learned all about the history of Chanukah, how the Greeks tried to force us to drop the spirituality and meaning of our beliefs and just do what we felt like, and how the Maccabees saved the day!
We disused how we too can stay proud to be who we are, even when it means not following the trends of others. As I say, "if you were meant to stand out, why are you trying to fit in?"

We prepared two special crafts for Chanukah.
1) A Message Menorah
Inside each glass bottle is a message for you and your family. Each night that you light a candle, share the message and do what it says. You can use the glass jars as candle holders but please wrap the bottom of the candle in tin-foil first just in case the glass breaks from the heat.

2) A Framed Blessing Guide
Please use these guides when lighting the Menorah. For the first night we say all three blessings, for the rest of the nights we only say two!
